Red Land Bear Co. by Mark and Sandy Hudson
Teddy bear artists Mark and Sandy Hudson have been nominated for numerous awards for their artistry and have appeared in teddy bear books and magazines. The husband and wife team began making collectible mohair teddy bears in 1995. Today, teddy bear collectors worldwide seek the couple’s artistic and often whimsical creations.
The Hudson’s interest in teddy bears was inadvertently sparked while writing a children’s book. For inspiration, the couple created a prototype of the book’s central character -- a misfit bear. The book went unpublished and the couple instead focused on teddy bear making, despite having no sewing or design experience. Unaware of existing how-to-workshops and teddy bear magazines, Mark and Sandy learned their unique style of teddy bear artistry by reading library books and by trial and error.
Mark is the principle teddy bear designer and also joints, stuffs and airbrushes. Sandy also creates teddy bear patterns in addition to selecting mohair, sewing the patterns, needle sculpting faces and accessorizing. The couple combines traditional and non-traditional design characteristics to create bears that have both realistic and teddy bear qualities.
