Mary George Teddy Bears
My interest in teddy bears began when I was looking for an antique rocker for our family room years ago. In researching antiques at the local library I came across Linda Mullin's book about antique bears and it was love at first sight when I saw all the photos of old bears. I wanted one desperately, but I also knew that antique bear prices did not fit into the budget of our young family.
On the suggestion of my husband, I tried making a teddy bear that looked like the antique bears I fell in love with. Needless to say, my first attempts left much to be desired, but I would not give up, and after many hours of researching old bears and making many patterns which incorporated the features of old bears, I finally came up with a design that I was satisfied with.
That was over 16 years ago, and although my bear designs are always evolving and changing, I now design of each bear I make as an individual (one-of-a-kind) while maintaining the "old" bear features that I love. My bears are original creations and each one is made entirely by myself, with his own special personality and expression.
